Reactivity
A successful bond is dependent on a harmonious relationship between the
chosen adhesive and the adherend. What this means is that some adhesives
will react to the chemical composition of the adherend, resulting in not
only an unsuccessful bond, but disastrous, and often toxic effects. Here
are some tips to avoid this heinous event.
- Try to match your adhesive and adherend with similar properties, i.e. Chemical composition, weight, flexibility. etc.
- Do not use a solvent based adhesive on polystyrenes.
- Do not use a hot glue melt on soft vinyls without letting it cool first.
- When ever possible, test your adhesive when working with plastics and rubbers.
